The Mundelein Fire Department

Hello,

The Mundelein Fire Department would like to remind everyone during the holiday season “Safety Takes No Vacation”. We hope the following tips and information will be helpful as you prepare to celebrate.

Winter Holiday Decorating & Lighting

The holiday decorations used can be exciting and beautiful but also dangerous if improperly used, especially for children. Did You Know?

U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 250 home structure fires that began with Christmas trees in 2003-2007. These fires caused an annual average of

• 14 civilian fire deaths

• 26 civilian fire injuries

• $13.8 million in direct property damage

On average, one of every 18 reported home Christmas tree fires resulted in a death.

Electrical problems were factors in 67% of these fires. Something that could burn was too close to the lights in 10% of the fires. (Source http://www.nfpa.org)

Keep the Wreath Red Program

In 1980, the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association adopted a new program called “Keep the Wreath Red”. This program was founded by the Naperville (IL) Fire Department in 1954.Keep the Wreath Red has become an annual event, with fire departments all across Illinois participating. The program is designed to focus an awareness of safety while decorating our homes for the holidays.

How the program works is quite simple; the local fire department places a wreath on the front of their building and lights it with a string of red lights. The wreaths remain lit twenty-four hours a day throughout the holiday season. Whenever a fire occurs that is a result of holiday decorations, a white bulb replaces a red bulb on the wreath. This serves as a constant reminder to practice safety while installing and displaying holiday decorations. Read more… >>

Severe Weather Tips

Severe weather can occur no matter where you are, day or night. Being prepared for severe weather is a must. In the event of a weather emergency, do you know what to do? Having a plan and practicing that plan may save your life. When severe weather approaches, seek shelter at once. Make sure you check safety tools like flashlights and have fresh batteries in them. Candles are not recommended as a source of light during power outages. Read more... >>
