Every precaution should be taken to follow Flag Etiquette. The United States Flag Code, first adopted in 1924 and amended through the present, prescribes flag etiquette for a variety of instances ensuring that our national symbol is treated properly.

Every precaution should be taken to prevent the flag from becoming soiled. The U.S. Flag Code states, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way.

The American Legion Post 867 and VVA Chapter 714 provide proper disposal and flag retirement ceremonies for the American flag. The Mundelein Fire Department serves as a local drop off for those American Flags that are no longer fit to display.
